Academic Scholarship from Triathlon Ontario
Once again the Triathlon Ontario is pleased to announce an Academic Scholarship for the 2011-12 school year.
The goal of this programme is to support the post secondary education of a high performance athlete with realistic international potential thus allowing them to focus on their academic studies and training.
Eligibility requirements
- a Triathlon Ontario member for 2011 and 2012
- Must maintain a minimum of 4 credits throughout the academic year
- Must be enrolled in a post secondary programme in Ontario
- Must have at least one international time standard (ie. run or swim)
- Must be an athlete of significant caliber to be competitive internationally
The scholarship will have a value of up to $5000. It will be paid in two installments - $2,500 when awarded and $2,500 after the successful completion of the first term.
The scholarship may be used for:
- Tuition
- Residence or food
- Books
Timelines:
3pm. June 30, 2011 - submission deadline
July 5 - 12 - applications evaluated by the committee
July 13 – recommendation made to the board of directors
August 1 - announcement of the recipient
Requirements as follows:
ATHLETIC REQUIREMENT:
- A triathlon race resume, including results for the previous three seasons. . Include all awards, significant recognition. Results should demonstrate significant improvement over the three years.
- Confirmation from the Senior Development Coach that the applicant has at least one international time standard as outlined in Triathlon Canada’s Normative Standards
- Other athletic interests and accomplishments
- Future goals for their involvement in triathlon. How far do you see yourself going? Ie,--ITU Olympics, long course professional, or merely as a lifestyle?
- What the applicant does to “give back” to the sport of triathlon
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT:
- A copy of High School transcript (applicants currently enrolled in Secondary School may submit mid-term results for Semester 2 in addition to previous academic results)
- A transcript of the most current year of post secondary education (if any)
- A letter of recommendation from a previous teacher or professor, illustrating the applicant’s attitude toward their academic studies
- Goals, aspirations outside of sport
OTHER/PERSONAL
- A letter of reference from someone (employer, or community member) outside academia/athletic giving an indication of the applicant’s interests, work habits, social interaction, etc.
- Some explanation of how the applicant fits academics with training obligations for triathlon. This should demonstrate how you balance the two, along with other obligations, needs in your life.
- Financial need – if this scholarship will make a difference to your future the committee needs to know! Tell the committee about your family – number and ages of siblings, what your parents do - anything that gives a clearer picture your economic situation. All information will remain confidential.
- Anything else you feel may be of interest to the committee
OBLIGATIONS TO TRIATHLON ONTARIO
The scholarship recipient:
- may be asked to perform up to 20 hours of service to Triathlon Ontario. This may be done in the form of appearances at Triathlon Ontario events eg. Banquets; outreach to children ie: schools, camps etc.;
- will be asked to wear Triathlon Ontario apparel whenever possible at all races in the 2011 season;
- will attend Provincials (if applicable due to category) and Nationals (this requirement may be waived with proof of injury);
- will allow his/her name and likeness to be used for reasonable Triathlon Ontario promotional activities;
- will not use any substances that contravene the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the rules of the International Triathlon Union and the Canadian Policy on Doping in Sport;
EVALUATION:
A committee has been formed consisting of three Triathlon Ontario members (the committee will not have a current board or staff member as part of its composition). All applications will be scored by each member of the committee in confidence.
Sections of the application will be scored 1-5 on a confidential scoring grid and a total for each application will be determined.
When all applications have been evaluated by each member of the committee the scores will be added together for a final application score.
In the event of a tie the committee will meet via conference call to determine a winner.
When a consensus is reached a recommendation will be presented it to the board via e-mail for final agreement.
HOW TO APPLY:
Applications must be received in the Triathlon Ontario office no later than 3 pm. June 30, 2011 to be considered.
All applicants must provide a digital photograph for posting on the Triathlon Ontario website. Photos may be sent as an electronic file but must arrive prior to July 3, 21011in order for the application to be considered.

The committee and OAT reserves the right NOT to award the scholarship if the number or quality of applications is not of a sufficient level.
